Not always organic?
How to make good choices.
Yesterday in Gone bananas. I started to mention my take on organic bananas, then pulled it in favor of more details.
As I've said earlier (And how about organic?), organic is the ideal, not a deal breaker. The much-better foods I'm putting into my body these days go a long way towards making up for whatever undesirables might be lurking therein. Well, that's my take at the moment, but there's more to the story.
How do you know, really, which way to go—organic or not—on any given fruit or veg?
The folks at Environmental Working Group have researched all this and come up with a handy list that ranks 47 produce items from 'clean' to 'dirty.' You can get the whole list as well as print a handy reference to carry with you. (Of course, I went for the free iPhone app.)
So to get back to bananas… they're so much pricier if they're organic. At one or two a day, I go through a lot of them. (Hardly ever make a green smoothie without bananas.) And since they're #27 on the list of 47, I consider them on the clean side and go with regular.
Ideally? Sure, organic. When I'm living my ideal life, I'll eat only organic produce. Meanwhile, the 'dirty produce' list helps a lot.
